(Avis d'origine) What a place, so moving to stsnd St on the spot were on the 1st July 1916 the Pals Bittalions went over the top, it is chillingvto see the distance that they were expected to take, knowing that the German Machine Guns were waiting for them. This is a must see, and by visiting this site and others, in some way these mens lives live on as we remember there sacrifice.

CEPENDANT .... nous avons essayé de monter sur le chemin de terre indiqué comme accès au site dans notre petit fourgon. Près du sommet de la voie, nous avons rencontré le propriétaire d’une voiture Dacia, qui nous a bloqués le chemin et nous a obligés agressivement à faire demi-tour sur la route principale. Le panneau au bas de la piste de la ferme interdit l’accès des autocars mais recommande de stationner à l’extérieur du cimetière de la route serre numéro 1 Pour un visiteur pour la première fois, il n’est pas évident que ce soit sur la route principale et non quelque part sur la piste. Le panneau n'interdit pas explicitement l'accès en voiture. Il semblerait que le propriétaire essaie activement de restreindre l'accès des véhicules à ce site. Les habitants m'ont dit que son comportement faisait l'objet d'articles de journaux et qu'il trouvait ça drôle. J'ai appelé le bureau des affaires étrangères mais cela ne les a pas intéressés. (Avis d'origine) Beautiful memorial to the Accrington and Barnsley pals battalions cut down on the first day of the Somme. HOWEVER....we attempted to drive up the dirt track that is signposted as access to the site in our small van. Near the top of the lane we encountered who we assume to be the landowner in a Dacia car, who blocked the path and forced us agressively to reverse back down to the main road. The sign at the bottom of the farm track prohibits coach access but advises parking outside serre road no1 cemetery. To a first time visitor it isn't clear that this is on the main road and not somewhere up the track. The sign doesn't explicitly prohibit access by car.It would appear that the landowner is actively trying to restrict vehicular access to this site. I've been told by locals that his behaviour has been the subject of newspaper articles and that he thinks it's funny. I called the foreign office but they weren't interested.
